This Contributor Spotlight mini series features the winners of the Kata Containers 4.0 Contributor Awards. In this article the spotlight is on Fabiano Fidêncio, the Kata community’s Multi-Talent Marvel.

Fabiano is a Senior Systems Software Engineer at NVIDIA and a long-time Kata Containers contributor. He is the humble leader in the Kata Containers project who brings passion and countless work hours into the community. While always busy hacking on something, he never misses to lend a helping hand when someone’s in need.

I asked him a few questions to learn a bit more about his journey and involvement in the project:

How long have you been contributing to Kata Containers, and what

drew you to the project? I've been contributing to Kata Containers since 2020. I started looking at the project when my employer at that time began evaluating it, but we needed to implement fixes to achieve our goals, and I've been contributing ever since.

What areas of the project do you contribute to?

I think at this point there's no area of the project that I haven't touched yet.

What is one contribution you are particularly proud of and why?

Not one specific contribution, but the journey to transform kata-deploy, which was a barely tested shell script used mostly by developers, into the project's primary interface for all users.

What has surprised you most about the Kata Containers community?

How supportive the community has been for those who actually want to work on the project, valuing contributions far more than talking, making this a perfect environment for those interested in learning and getting their hands dirty.

I've been here a long time, I've broken things, completely changed things, and always had the support to push the project forward.

What are you most excited about in the project right now?

The project is being used more than ever, and many people are focusing on different areas, ranging from agent sandboxing and trusted execution environments to current efforts on hardening our core use-case which is host protection against untrusted workloads.

What advice would you give to someone just getting started?

Do not be afraid and be reliable.

Do not be afraid to raise issues, propose changes, or break things. And be reliable when working with other maintainers, working on proposed changes, and fixing breakages introduced by yourself or by others ;-).
